    • Located in Sorde-l'Abbaye in the heart of an old fortified town, Sorde Abbey is one of the jewels of the Landes heritage which tells more than fifteen centuries of history!

This abbey, founded in the 10th century by the Benedictines, was built on the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa which has preserved magnificent mosaics typical of the Aquitaine school (4th-6th centuries). The church, with free access, is rich in sculpted decorations and Romanesque mosaics as well as an 18th century marble marquetry high altar.
The monastic buildings are revealed in free or commented visit. Rebuilt in the 18th century, they now offer the image of monumental ruins that invite you to explore emotionally charged. Under the majestic terrace, the cryptoporticus, an astonishing underground gallery connected to a landing stage, reveals the singularity of this exceptional heritage. The view of the Gave d'Oloron and its wooded meanders fully contributes to the charm of the site.

This exceptional ensemble is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the routes to Santiago de Compostela in France.

went for an evening visit with very low expectations. It was simply magic! brought my 3 year old who loved It too. Caves under the monastry were cool and make sure to visit the place close to the river

Beautiful peaceful surroundings and the Abbaye is splendid. A fascinating scale model of the Abbaye and it's surroundings of how it must have looked is something to go look at. Beautiful stained glass windows too.

Predominately ruins, but some interesting sections remaining, including the storage rooms asking the river. A few displays also with a look.
