    • Nestled in an exceptional and green setting at the crossroads of the Landes, the Basque Country and Béarn, Arthous Abbey has experienced multiple lives and vicissitudes. Founded in the 12th century by Premonstratensian canons who lived there until the Revolution, the Abbey was transformed into a farm before becoming a Historic Monument and Museum of France. The quality of its Romanesque decor, its modillions and capitals of fantastic animals, biblical or secular characters, and its plant motifs are at the origin of the rescue of the Abbey and its remarkable conservation.

Open to the public from April to November, Arthous Abbey invites you to discover the stories carved in its stone, its legendary bestiary, its cells and treasures, and to learn about the general history of the site... Each season, new Temporary exhibitions occupy the Sainte-Marie d'Arthous church and invite the visitor to look up at its beautiful framework with harmonious dimensions.

Today August 4th we wished to visit this place. Their website was not working. We called: there is a recorded message advising that they were open on Sundays. So, after 40 minutes drive we arrived and, to our great disappointment, it was closed! A notice on the entrance door said that they are " exceptionally closed". So we had to turn back and drove back for another 40 minutes. It is very regretful that they did not warn visitors on their telephone recorded message. This irresponsible behaviour shows great disrespect for their visitors and causes great inconvenience. Their management is not to be trusted and their reputation is compromised. We shall not go.back.
