    • Classified as a Historic Monument since 1939, the Roman-Gothic church of Brassempouy dates from the beginning of the 12th century.
A military defense tower was attached to it in the 13th century. Enhanced in the 14th century, the church was further remodeled a century later with the construction of two side chapels and the stone spire which crowns the top of the tower, jewels of flamboyant Gothic.

In the 16th century, a stone vault - asymmetrical to adapt to the offset of the chapels - was built. All the keystones are decorated and it should be noted in particular the presence of a hanging keystone - which is very rare - representing a phylactery angel with folded wings.

After this important work, particular care is given to the furniture. In the 18th century, a very colorful woodwork decoration was installed in the choir. In the 19th century, stained glass windows and an original plaster stations of the cross embellished the church.
You can also admire the white marble altar, a gift made to the parish at the beginning of the 20th century. We can see Christ surrounded by the four evangelists.

Finally, at the level of the stand, a small door was perhaps reserved for the cagots. The term cagots designates outcasts, victims of numerous discriminations, whose origin remains poorly known and whose population was concentrated in the south-west of France.

The restoration work, undertaken several years ago, has finally been completed. The Saint-Saturnin Church in Brassempouy has today regained its splendor!

The church is open every day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (audio-guided tour).
Guided tours of the village and the church are offered all year round for groups (minimum 10 people). By reservation with PréhistoSite – 05 58 89 21 73

Very beautiful church composed of different periods ranging from the almost primitive Romanesque to the flamboyant Gothic. The offset ribbed vault is a masterpiece of its kind and an astonishing architectural gesture. This church is symptomatic of the quality of culture and art which has spread to the depths of France. It is reassuring to see such a place so well preserved and maintained.

Beautiful church in the heart of a typical village. Open and has a fairly complete and free audio guide!
