Useful information

Province : Dax / Chalosse / Tursan / Adour

  • English
    • The city is crossed by the Louts, a small tributary of the Adour whose banks were populated very early, as evidenced by the many prehistoric remains discovered.
Hagetmau will take off in the 4th century. 7 missionaries (Sever, Girons, Justin, Clair, Polycarpe, Jean, Babile) receive the mission of Pope Liberius (352-366) to evangelize the South West in the hands of the Romans and the Aryans. The 7 companions leave for the Aquitaine soil. Girons is killed by the Vandals. Around 778, Charlemagne built in Saint Girons the first monument dedicated to the apostle of Chalosse. Around 859, the Normans destroyed the Saint Girons mill belonging to the monks and left only ruins in place of the church. The whole was rebuilt in the 12th century. It is made up of an abbey church housing the crypt, a Benedictine monastery and the Nayet mill. In 1569, the church in turn fell victim to the Huguenot devastation led by Montgomery and his troops. Rebuilt, the religious worship is ensured there until the beginning of the 19th century century. In 1904, the church was definitively destroyed, leaving worship to take place in the current church of Hagetmau, the first stone of which was laid in 1884.
The seigniory of Hagetmau lived in a castle located in the current city center. It remained in the same Lescun family until the revolution and was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. There are few historical remains, the city has modern buildings changing the appearance of the city. During the last world war, the demarcation line separating free France from occupied France passed through Hagetmau separating the city in two.
